MyChurch – Online Community between Sundays

by joesuh on August 18, 2009

At a church I visited in San Jose recently,  there is a sign in the parking lot that churchgoers see as they exit on Sunday mornings:  “Now, church begins”

mychurch_logoHello, I’m Joe Suh, and I co-founded MyChurch along with my wife Carol.

MyChurch is social networking for churches.  35,000 churches have started communities through the MyChurch site and the Facebook app – facebook.com/mychurch

All churches face the same challenge of keeping their members engaged.  The church pastor has his flock’s attention for one hour on Sunday mornings.  But members can easily feel disconnected Mon-Sat, which is when community really happens.

Here’s a 3-slide intro to what we’re about:

The past 10 weeks have been an incredible learning experience for us.  From superstar entrepreneurs like Hiten Shah and Eric Ries, to Stanford professors, to advisors from within Facebook – the hands-on mentoring has been priceless.

We started MyChurch nearly 3 years ago as a part-time, bootstrapped “ministry”.  We were corporate-types who were clueless about starting an internet company.  I would have gladly paid an MBA tuition to have had this 10-week bootcamp when we started.

But it’s never too late to pivot business models (which we recently did!).  Keep tabs on our story by following on Twitter, or becoming a fan of one of our Facebook apps.
